This universal truth of a healthy body and mind was thoroughly understood and accepted by our ancestors right from the evolution of the human race, and they were practicing “Yogasanas”, Surya Namaskar, long walking in fresh air and swimming in streams , rivers or oceans.

One of the main reasons for attaining all these qualities and virtues can be attributed to the magic Mallakhamb culture , the inseparable oneness of Hanuman with this divine art. As it is , monkey tribes inhabit the jungles. Their abode is trees and creepers . Jumping, aerobatics, swinging, sleeping, hanging and playing either singly or in a group, all these are their routine activities. Similarly, awakeness, vigilance and untiring activity are their inborn habits or natural characteristics.

He was a renowned disciple of Ustad Raghobadada of Pune. (Ustad or Vastad implies a superior physical coach). The story or the legend attributed to the revival of this unique feat of  Mallakhamb is as follows:

Two victorious and notable wrestlers called Ali and Gulab from the Nizam of Hyderabad once came to the darbar of Shrimat Bajirao Peshwa . They threw open a challenge to the state wrestlers by calling for a bout. They believed that they will have no match for them in Maratha State and would get a certificate for their supremacy. But a young lad of 18 named Guru Balambhattdada Deodhar accepted their challenge . Hew was given one month’s time for preparation. During this period, he went to the Goddess called “Saptashringi Devi”, in Nasik District. This temple is surrounded by seven peaks of hills and a thick forest . Most devotionally he subdued himself to the deity and very sincerely started practicing yoga and tricks of wrestling. Thus, he remained constantly vigilant and fully concentrated on his task ahead . Similar to the story of Eklavya and  Dronacharya of Mahabharata, this devotee of unshaken will remain fully engrossed in his dreams of success. His meditation was so deep that at one moment a divine flash adorned his vision. He saw Lord Hanuman demonstrating on a wooden pole a few tricks of the bout and the secret of success to be used on the day of the bout against the rivals. He was spellbound and absorbed the hints and tips fully. By this he acquired divine inspiration, vision and force. In the same way, he too practiced the tricks continuously on the wooden pole and became fully confident and resourceful to fight.

With his masterly tricks the hero Balambhattdada humbled down the two proud and powerful mallas of Hyderabad.
